FEB 7, 2022 Meeting Recap - Summer Opportunities

Feb. 7, 2022, 3:48 p.m. by Katherine Merrill

At the February 7th Meeting, summer opportunities were covered.  These included Internships, REUs and Summer Intensives.

Holly Fosher, CEMS Career Readiness Coordinator, provided the attached Internship Guide handout.  In the guide, you will see many built-in links for you to review.  The links include Handshake, LinkedIn, many Job Boards, Buzzfile, Events, and Resources.  Please contact Holly for any questions or general information about summer opportunities.  You can email her and schedule an appointment through Navigate.  Or there are drop-in times:   Wed & Thurs, 1:30-3:30pm @ Perkins 101.  This week there are also these events supported by Holly:

Also reviewed the STAT & DS CLub webpage, Career Resources Tab.  If you are interested in Summer Intensives (SIVs), look at Other Summer Programs including Dr. Sherri Rose's webpage.  A summer intensive is a 4-6 week program during the summer to spend time intensively learning a topic.  Most of these are for BioStatistics.  Some offer stipends.

Professor Puck Rombach has provided the following links with opportunities for undergraduate & graduate students:

    • Phase AI is a community for data professionals to connect, learn, and advance their careers
    • UCLA IPAM (Institute for Pure and Applied Math)  Look at the Programs tab for Student Research Programs, and then for RIPS (Research in Industrial Projects for Students).

Professor Chip Cole, Director of the Vermont Space Grant Consortium, has offered this opportunity.  See handouts attached.

I am writing to let you know about a NASA-funded undergraduate research program, called the NASA Research Experience for Undergraduates, or NASA REU for short.  The program awards successful applicants with a $6,000 stipend and up to $1,000 for travel to support student-conducted research under the mentorship of a faculty member.  The research must be in an area aligned with NASA priorities.

Eligible recipients are U.S. citizens enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program within a STEM discipline at a Vermont college or university.

Please see the attached announcement for full details, including instructions on on how to apply.  The application deadline is March 25, 2022.  The NASA REU program is a great way to learn about research related to space exploration while gaining valuable experience!

Here is an excel workbook with many summer programs in the areas of Statistics, BioStatistics, Data Science and Computer Science.  Use the TABS at the bottom of the workbook to go to the different areas of study.

And finally, the CEMS Dean's Office has some funding to support unique undergraduate student opportunities, such as Travel Support for students participating in formal summer experiences abroad or in unpaid internship experiences.  Proposals can be sent to Jennifer.Main@uvm.edu and must meet the following requirements:

            • no more than one page of text (a second page with images is allowed)
            • a support letter from a faculty advisor
            • include a short introduction to the project, a description of how funds will be used, and a budget including other funds that can be used to support the proposed activity
